Miss Taiwanese World supports World of Dumpling Cooking Demo with Celebrity Chef Theresa Lin at Skirball Cultural Center

Back in September 2016 (I know this is super late), I had the opportunity to work with Celebrity Chef Theresa Lin, the Julia Child of Taiwan at a Dumpling cooking demonstration at Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, CA.

img_0686You may not recognize her name, but she’s a household name in the Taiwanese food community as she’s written countless cookbooks and partnered with movie director, Ang Lee on a number of his productions. She was his food stylist for the movie Eat Drink Man Woman and the catering director for Life of Pie. Now she travels the world and works with local restaurants in promoting Taiwanese cuisine.

In essence she’s successfully combined my love for food and education and turned it into a wonderful career. She’s a great role model and one who’s adventurous spirit is still alive and strong. Before the workshop she told me that she just came back from Peru and will be back on the road again! Whew! I hope I have that much energy and spunk when I’m her age.

During the workshop patrons learned how to make dumplings, including the skin from scratch. She instructed us on techniques in how to roll out the dough as well as a step-by-step process in making an excellent traditional filling. We made two different types to accommodate food allergies (a vegetarian and a meat), and both were absolutely delicious.

While I do make dumplings from scratch at home, never had I made the dumpling skin from scratch. It definitely has a chewier texture that store bought can’t mimic, but it’s a lot of work and I think I’ll leave that to the professionals 😛

Overall, it was a really educational and delicious night. I learned tremendously and it reinforced my pride for my heritage and the amazing food that my culture brings. Cooking and eating is a wonderful way to share one’s ancestry, and it’s my hope to bring more people together by celebrating our similarities rather than our differences (over a good meal of course!).

What kind of food do you enjoy sharing with family and friends?

Miss Taiwanese World brings in the New Year at TECO – Orange County Branch

Can you believe it’s already 2017? I hope that you all had a wonderful start to the new year! The royal court certainly kicked it off in full force.

This year I spent New Years Day at the Taipei Economic and Culture Office in Orange County. While the venue was a more intimate one it was a full house (standing room only!). Many local Taiwanese business owners and representatives from different organizations attended and the royal court welcomed patrons and presented flowers to the esteemed guests. The afternoon was filled with entertainment from local talent and finished with traditional Taiwanese snacks and photos.

This is also a popular time of year to make new resolutions and mine for this and for many years has been to have fun and make new memories with family and friends (and to floss more – an annual resolution). As Miss Taiwanese World Queen I get the opportunity to share my cultural heritage through this platform and I hope in addition to my annual resolution that I will post blog entries more regularly.

My hope is to consistently post an entry once a week. Miscellaneous Monday will either showcase a Miss Taiwan event from 2016 or 2017 (as I do have a huge backlog of entries), or highlight one of my recent travels/food destinations. If I’m feeling ambitious, I’ll do a second blog post on Wonderful Wednesday.

What kind of goals do you have for 2017?

Miss Taiwanese World reflects on 2016 and the year to come

2016 – you sure were a year of surprises and at the beginning it was a rough start. I had challenges in all aspects of my life and felt trapped. I went to bed wishing that the emotional turmoil of life would go away and woke up knowing that I would get a new helping of it. I hated feeling burnt out and so unhappy, and I didn’t understand why any of my efforts didn’t change the situation.  Yet, this was a year where I felt that God told me to just be still and let go.

I couldn’t really comprehend the idea of not having a plan and knowing my next steps, but I unwillingly trusted and went for the ride of my life – mind you I was TERRIFIED as I have always been a planner, but the next couple of months really showed me things that I could have never expected.

Never did I expect to represent my cultural heritage as Miss Taiwanese World Queen and attend some amazing events including a Dumpling Making Night with Taiwan Celebrity host Theresa Lin and the Annual Double Ten Celebration on behalf of the organization. (I’m sorry I’m still backed up with some of these events so stay tuned on those entries)

I also didn’t expect a new day job and also going back to school to take three graduate school classes at night. The teacher/student role combo wasn’t easy and there were periods of time where I wanted to throw in the towel because I was just exhausted, but I successfully completed the classes with straight A’s!

Visiting two new states (Washington and Oregon – absolutely gorgeous) and more than a dozen new cities on my West Coast Roadtrip was also another 2016 accomplishment. I did a second budget roadtrip a week ago and am excited to share with you all some new hidden gems in my upcoming entries!

Locally I explored my own town and attended multiple TV Tapings including: The Voice, America’s Got Talent, Family Feud Celebrity Edition (Team Lance Bass vs. Team Kellie Pickler), Jimmy Kimmel Live (Special Guest Elton John & Usher), and the last season of American Idol – seriously one of the coolest FREE things you can do in SoCal. I also got to be on TV during on the day of Kobe’s last game in LA. Can you find me in the picture below?

This year LA welcomed a new attraction at Universal Studios Hollywood and while initially I was hesitant about getting an annual pass without anyone to go with I can say now that I’ve visited both the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Grinchmas for the first time (and many times after that).

img_2847

Suffice to say that this was a year of adventure and it’s not where we start, but how we finish. I’d like to say that my story is still unfolding and that I’m continuing to write it 🙂

I wish you all a wonderful and prosperous New Year and hope you all make beautiful new memories for 2017.

Take chances and make the most of every moment.

Introducing Nitrolado’s Spooky New Halloween Flavors

Gelato is one of my favorite types of dessert and with Halloween coming up you know that there are going to be some eerie-sitable flavors for the month of October. Among businesses that are under the magical spell is Nitrolado (Yelp Page, Facebook Page), a local dessert shop in Garden Grove that specializes in liquid nitrogen gelato. Known for their edible churro bowls and Asian inspired flavors they’re introducing a New Halloween concept.

img_0669

Available all month long gelato enthusiasts can try one of three limited edition flavors.

  1. Coconut Lavender
  2. Pumpkin Spice with Caramelized Candied Bacon
  3. Blood Velvet Brownie (red velvet)
I had the 2nd option (Pumpkin Spice) and I loved it paired with salty yet sweet bites of candied bacon. It’s to die for, muahahahaha…
img_0671
Starting October 24th, every night until Halloween, October 31st, from 7pm – close, patrons can also opt to upgrade for their Halloween cup complete with fog and your choice of lights to complete your spooky dessert. Bring a friend on your visit as there’s a Buy 1 Get 1 50% off anything off the menu for all guests dressed in costume from October 28th to October 30th. I’m debating between going as Chun-Li or Sailor Mars.

Miss Taiwanese World celebrates Taiwan’s Birthday with the TECO Orange County chapter for an intimate Tea Party Ceremony

After enjoying a dynamic and patriotic performance at the Taipei Economic and Culture Office (TECO) LA Chapter (see Double Ten Goodwill Entry to read about it), the royal court was invited to the OC Chapter to participate in their annual Double Ten Tea Party Ceremony. Located in an industrial part of Santa Ana, the teen title holder and myself represented our organization and joined in on the afternoon festivities.

I debuted my new “Frozen” inspired dress, and with my tiara and rhinestoned accessories, I’d have to say that the ensemble does resemble a lot like Queen Elsa. Others commented that I look like a mermaid. What do you think?

The cozy venue seated around 200 guests and VIPS included local board members, and Taiwanese business members. We had a full program that included a flag ceremony with military officials, singing of various patriotic songs (both Taiwanese and American), a key-note speaker who encouraged to continue preserving our Taiwanese American heritage, raffle of Taiwan products, and a cake-cutting.

My favorite part of the program was watching the Lion Dancers enter the premise with their clanging cymbals and drums. There were a total of three full sized lions and a baby one who wowed the crowd with their playful performance. The royal court and VIP guests were given red envelops (symbolizing good luck) and encouraged to “feed” the lions on stage.

I unfortunately don’t have pictures of my interaction with them, but boy was it fun.

The Taipei Economic and Culture Office (Santa Ana) was established in Chinatown and relocated to their present location. The office has a vast collection of books and multi-media resources available for patrons to check out in additional to cultural costumes and equipment. Similar to the pageant organization TECO (Santa Ana) mission is to promote and preserve Taiwanese culture for generations to come. To learn more about this organization head to their site (here)

Miss Taiwanese World supports the Taiwan Goodwill Performance to kick off Double Ten Day!

For many readers October 10th is 20 days before you need to get a costume for Halloween, but for my Taiwanese compatriots, it’s Double Ten Day – also known as Taiwan National Day.  It marks the beginning of the Wuchang Uprising  a revolt that led to a declaration of independence from the central government by Wuchang and several other provinces in China in 1911 and this year we are celebrating Taiwan’s 105th anniversary.  With such a milestone you know we’re going to have a rockin’ party to celebrate.

Hosted at the Taipei Economic and Culture Center in Los Angeles we had the opportunity to watch a wealth of performances from all age groups in the Taiwanese community. The programed started out with singing the Taiwanese and American National Anthem, then proceeded to officers of the military creating various formations with poise and precision. The program was filled with talents from local Taiwanese schools and non profit organizations, and my favorite were the traditional Taiwanese aboriginal dance followed by the silk sleeve performance.

img_0319

Similar to the United Stated, Taiwan’s colors are Red, White and Blue – and my pageant sisters and I all coincidentally dressed up in blue, which looked fabulous in all the photos. I guess we really do have a connection to one another.

Among the attendees at this event were many influential political leaders including: Congressman Dr. Judy Chu and the Mayor of Walnut Mary Sue. There were many other local male councilmen and community leaders who supported this celebration and it was wonderful to see everyone come together to commemorate such an important day. It was entertaining, fun, and just one of the many celebrations to wish a Happy Birthday to Taiwan! Stay tuned on the next several posts – the royal court had an awesome time representing the beautiful island.

XOXO,
Irene

Style Week OC at Fashion Island in Newport Beach

It’s true California’s palm trees don’t change colors like the East Coast foliage, but it’s officially autumn and that means cozy knit sweaters, cashew scarves, and trench coats are making a come back! A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to attend Style Week OC a fashion festival celebrating the Fall in style. The weekend festival kicked off the occasion with a fabulous outdoor runway show featuring the latest trends. It was obviously fierce.

img_0586Pink and yellow combinations, statement furs, and one shoulder outfits were evident on the runway; however, rich, warm neutrals (above) are always chic and a perfect way to transition to Fall. After the show fashionistas were guided to various participating stores who were pumpin’ rockin jams and serving various mocktails and light bites. My friend and I were given VIP treatment while browsing through the racks.

Various stores participated in the annual event and several actually had various fun activities as well. At G-Star, known for their urban street style clothing hosted Kim Kyne, an extremely talented fashion artist, who created personalized sketches.

img_9975-1She took a photo of me modeling one of G-Star’s super soft leather jacket and evergreen beenie and begin drawing with her felt tip markers free-hand. Looks pretty legit to me!

Michael Stars was another Fashion Island store that hosted some fun activities, including frozen banana tasting from Hannah’s Bananas and a complimentary Polish from the Nail Bar. While Rose Quartz and Serenity (essentially baby pink and baby blue), are the 2016 Pantone colors of the year, I decided to do a nod to the color by selecting a grayish purple (when combined the colors it makes this beautiful and very wearable color.)

Next we headed to Brooks Brothers to get in touch with our artistic side and colored away on these adorable Inspired Art Wine postcards featuring Brooks Brothers very own lamb. Coloring is so therapeutic, and if you need an outlet to express yourself Inspired Art Wine in Costa Mesa has different classes to paint and create different masterpieces.

Other stores such as Rebeca Taylor, Halston Heritage, Elie Tahari, Trina Turk, and Anthropologie also participated in the event and hosted fabulous beauty/fashion bloggers meet and greets. Overall, this Welcoming of Fall shopping party was a blast and it reminded me a lot of when I attended New York’s fashion week shopping parties. These events are always so much fun and I can’t wait when we transition to my favorite season – winter!

What’s your favorite season?

Miss Taiwanese World commemorates Confucius’ 2566th Birthday at the Confucius Ceremony in El Monte, CA

Knowledge is power and as an educator I have a deep respect for all great minds and individuals who make a positive mark on history. Confucius’ has no doubt been in influential teacher and philosopher so it’s no surprise that several organizations in the LA area came together on to celebrate this 2566th birthday.

The afternoon program was packed with rituals to commemorate Confucius and many attendees from all walks of life attended. There were Chinese school teachers, children, city councilmen, and Chinese celebrities. I wish I had more pictures to share, but photography from my end was more limited. Here’s a photo of me and the Teen titleholder representing the the royal court.

The ceremony was a very elaborate one with all members dressed in costume. There were several other individuals dressed in other attires who took on different roles including an enthusiastic drummer, English and Chinese MC, and officers dressed in yellow or dark blue uniforms. After the ceremony finished we had four lion dancers and a wealth of entertainment. The woman below is a famous Chinese tv actress!

Confucius believed in self-cultivation, which is the ability for humans to shape their own destiny.  He believed that we are all teachable and as a counselor and educator I too agree with this philosophy. With the right mindset, hard work, and diligence we can achieve more than if we ever expected.

For myself, I expect my future to be an impactful one. I want to be a positive role model and be a resource for students who are still figuring out who they are and want to be. As a supporter of education I too believe that teachers are life-long students and I myself have returned to school to continue my own professional growth. Shout to everyone who goes to work during the day and school at night! It’s definitely hard and there are days when I just want to just be a bum and go back to bed, but I know that these investments are worthwhile in the long run. We control our actions that influences who we will become tomorrow, so my question for todays post is this….

What are your goals and how do you plan to reach them?

Miss Taiwanese World 2016 & Diamond Bar Chinese American Association celebrate the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival

On Saturday September 10th the Royal Court was invited to support Diamond Bar’s annual Mid-Autumn Moon Festival, an afternoon dedicated to the big cheese. It’s believed in Chinese culture that the moon is at it’s roundest and brightest of the year, and that symbolizes unity and camaraderie – and nothing brings people together like food and entertainment!

The spacious park was transformed into a mini night-market complete with different vendors serving up traditional Taiwanese snacks like stinky tofu, milk tea with boba, fish skewers etc. There was also live performances by the children of the community and I was quite impressed with the skill of many of these entertainers. We had a martial art demonstration, song and dance performance, poetry reading, and traditional Chinese instruments just to name a few. Our royal court also participated and worked the stage with our catwalk.

img_9895While the celebration was a intimate one U.S. Congressmen Ed Royce and other local city council members made appearances to show their support. It definitely takes a village to host an event like this and the volunteers do this year after year.

Overall this was a fun low-key event where I got to meet some wonderful members of the Taiwanese community in a fun atmosphere. Thursday, September 15th is the actual Moon Festival Date. What do you plan to do?

Will you be eating moon cake? Until next time….

Los Angeles Times – The Taste (Food and Wine event)

Los Angeles is home to some of the world’s finest restaurants, so it should come to no surprise that the “City of Angels” attracts culinary geniuses from near and far to share their edible creations and delectable bites.

During Labor Day weekend, I had the opportunity to attend “The Taste” a three-day foodie extravaganza hosted by the Los Angeles Times and presented by Citibank at the Paramount Pictures Studios. The list of corporate sponsors also included:  Acura, Stella Artois, and KTLA (among others). With powerhouse businesses supporting the festival you it’s going to be a star-studded one.

img_9683Over 100 food and wine vendors were presented at this event ranging from 118 Degree (vegan food) to ZRY Vodka. There was something for everyone and many of the booths boasted on their field to fork ideology in preparing their masterpieces.

I’ve been to my fair share of Tasting events, but few come to close the caliber and star-power as this event and why yes that’s a Chef Michael Cimarusti – the co-owner of Providence, Jonathan Gold’s #1 restaurant on his “101 best restaurants” list.

He shared with us his childhood favorite recipe – clam stuffing -and showed up everything from how to shuck clams to how to properly season the mixture. The interactive demonstration was both entertaining and information, but the best part was tasting the end result. I mean it was purely to ensure that the integrity of the dish remained consistent, which it did 🙂

With a DJ spinning awesome the hottest tunes, a picturesque atmosphere to enjoy the block party, and delicious food and spirits I had a fabulous time and can’t wait till next year to live it all over again. Maybe it’ll be an annual tradition.

What’s on your menu during Labor Day weekend? Hot dogs and burgers? Fine dining? Comment below.
