Sample 30+ of Anaheim’s Best Restaurants at the 22nd Annual Taste of Anaheim

Anaheim is home to the “Happiest Place on Earth” and a centralized location to a mecca of franchises and hole-in-walls, so naturally this city would host an impressive list of restaurants for their 22nd Annual Taste of Anaheim. If you’re like me, getting the opportunity to sample the cities best restaurants in one spot is a foodie’s dream come true!

(Left to Right): Rainforest Cafe (mud pudding), Zov’s (sliders), Nothing Bundt Cake (lemon cake), Smoqued (BBQ bites), and (yummy dessert)

It was so fitting that the Taste of Anaheim was held on “National Eat What You Want Day” (it’s seriously a day!) and given the variety of choices at this annual event, I definitely gave cheat day a run for it’s money. Located at the Gardenwalk in Anaheim, patrons could enjoy a wide array of vendors from A-Z spread across the upper and lower level. A few of the vendors included but not limited to: Applebees, Roys, Ruth Chris and Zovs. Disney also had a large presence at the event with three restaurants: Catal, Naples, and Tortilla Jo’s.

(Left to Right): Food Blog Friends, Rosco’s (Fried Chicken and Waffles), La Brea Bakery (Panzanella Salad),

In years past the venue seemed crammed with long lines, but this year it was much more spacious and the lines all kept moving making it easy to try all the booths offerings. I also loved the belly bar tables so guests could enjoy multiple sampling at a time and their vibrant live entertainment made the experience a complete one.

Highlights
1. Roscoe’s definitely stole the show with their chicken and waffles as each guest was given a full meal (fried chicken, mac and cheese, waffles and syrup).
2. Freckled Strawberry Lemonade from TGIF. Super refreshing and one of the few vendors that offered complimentary beverages at their booth.
3. True Grits served Pork Belly Bao and was one booth that I frequented often. I loved the contrast of the raspberry jam with the savory melt in your mouth pork belly. Yum!
4. Spin the Wheel prizes from Dave and Busters was a fun and entertaining booth. My friend won a clear drawstring bag!
5. The sweet and savory smoked meat from Smoqued was finger-licking good!
6. Lamb tacos from Urbana was solid
7. Sample of lemon cake from Nothing Bundt Cake was fluffy and moist

(Left to Right): Catal (Pita and Hummus). True Grits (Pork Belly Bao), Urbana (Lamb Tacos), Taste of Anaheim Logo

This was my 2nd year attending this annual event and I look forward to visiting again for many years to come!

Whats your favorite restaurant in Anaheim?

Miss Taiwanese World kicked off Taiwanese Heritage Week at TECO-OC chapter with Taiwanese feast

May 7th marks the beginning of Taiwanese Heritage Week and the Taipei Economic and Culture Office (TECO) in Santa Ana celebrated their 11th annual kick-off celebration at it’s headquarters on Sunday.

Taiwanese community group photo

In attendance were government officials, local community leaders, Taiwanese students, as well as prominent newspapers who covered the event. While the heritage week is a weeklong occasion, two weeks worth of events have been scheduled to showcase the Taiwanese culture.  One event that I’m greatly looking forward to attending as a goodwill ambassador is the “Celebration Ceremony” held at my alma mater, Chapman University, on May 16th.

Volunteers serving traditional Taiwanese food for guests to enjoy

Following introductions and the formal certificates of recognition ceremony, volunteers and leaders enjoyed delicious traditional Taiwanese food prepared by generous volunteers who worked tirelessly to highlight some of Taiwan’s best dishes. I’m a firm believer that food brings people together and that you can learn so much about a culture through the cuisine. One of my favorite memories is actually going to the Taiwan night markets and snacking on cart food, which this feast featured extensively.

Have you been to Taiwan? What’s your favorite memory?

California Cookie Dough Grand Opening in Fountain Valley

Growing up my brother and I always loved baking cookies with my mom, and I’ll be the first to admit that sometimes the cookie batter doesn’t always go on the tray in the oven. *halo over head*  I’d often lick the left-over batter mix on the cake mixer as one of my guilty pleasures. Thankfully, I hadn’t been cursed with contaminated pathogens such as Salmonella and E. coli. Yet, there’s a new store in town where you can enjoy cookie batter without wondering if you’re at risk for food poisoning.

Decor and Menu

I attended the Grand Opening for California Cookie Dough (18854 Brookhurst St) in Fountain Valley to try out what could be the newest dessert craze to get the latest scoop. Upon entering the hole-in-a-wall, I was greeted by the friendly manager and allowed to sample their various creations. I was informed that after many attempts at perfecting the flavors before they’ve decided on ten unique combinations.

Double scoop of “Grey Matter” and “Coconut Delight”

After careful consideration I decided on their popular “Grey Matter” which has a potent oreo and chocolate chip cookie flavor as well as the “Coconut Delight”. It is quite rich and decadent treat, but great for sharing. It’s fairly dense, so one scoop would certainly suffice. They also have milk on tap that comes in the vintage bottles as well as Nitro cold brew coffee for patrons who need an extra boost of energy.

The store hours are great as they’re open late (10pm on weekdays, and 11pm on Saturday; Closed on Tuesdays), so I imagine that it’ll be a popular destination in the sleepy town.

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Newport Beach Film Festival

The Newport Beach Film Festival is one of Orange County’s crown jewels. Held each year at the end of April throughout Newport Beach and Costa Mesa, this annual event showcases both local and international talent as they veil new projects through their visual story-telling. This year the festival is celebrating their 19th Anniversary and with tickets starting at $15 it’s an affordable price-point for all to enjoy.

Newport Beach Film Festival Program Books

300+ movies participated this year so it was really difficult to decide which film to watch; however based on times and dates I decided to check out a documentary on identical twins who live identical lives. Little did I know that the short  I picked granted me an afternoon of five shorts documentaries.

Upon checking into the theater, volunteers scanned my confirmation and handed me my ticket. I then proceeded to the theater and was given a sheet of all the film titles and asked to vote on the best film for an “audience choice award”. Two of the shorts were produced by Chapman University film students (Yay- alma mater!) which focused on the lives of the Mawali people in Africa, one was focused on the impact of plastic straws, another showcased how fishing the traditional way versus commercial fishing impacts fish flavor, and of course the film I initially choose fed my curiosity on the lives of identical twins.

Q/A with filmmakers

After all documentaries were shown, representatives from the films featured went to the front to answer a brief Q&A regarding the film and potential future projects. I was very impressed by the quality of films and felt more informed about these various topics covered. I even made a pledge to stop using plastic straws and look forward to attending this event next year.

Poki Poki HB Grand Opening

Lately I’ve been trying to incorporate more vegetables into my lifestyle and with poke places poppin’ up left and right in Orange County it’s fairly easy to eat a wide selection of healthy ingredients in one bowl. Poki Poki HB is one the newest edition in Huntington Beach with a Buy 1 Get 1 Free promotion at their Grand Opening I decided to try them out.

Free poke bowl coupon!

At the store entrance guests were given the opportunity to “spin the wheel” and I landed on a “Free Poki Bowl” – Woohoo! With that coupon the manager said that I could redeem TWO free poki bowls since there was a BOGO day. My mom and I were extremely happy since we both got a free meal.

Inside of the store

Like many fast food poki places, guests pick a base, protein scoop, sauce, and toppings before checkout. I decided on a half-and-half base with spring mix and brown rice, salmon, octopus, tuna, and all toppings with the exception of jalapeños and avocados ($1 extra). Their sauce selection is straight-forward as patrons choose from not spicy, mild, and spicy. I ordered the not spicy and I think it’s a combination of ponzu and perhaps soy sauce.

BOGO Poke bowls!

While this meal was complimentary, I honestly did really enjoyed it. The plate was colorful and the portions were extremely generous. I also loved the diverse fish selection: octopus, yellowtail, salmon, ahi tuna, spicy tuna, shrimp, albacore, scallop and for the non-fish patrons tofu, so there’s something for everyone. The assortment of toppings was also wide as I got to include both western (ie. corn, green onions) and eastern (ie. masago eggs, seaweed) additions. They also have lemon infused self-serve water station which is a nice touch and makes my H2O beverage even more refreshing and hydrating.

The one area that I’d recommend to the owners is perhaps rethink about the vessel in which they prepare these entrees. We eat with our eyes and although the ingredients look and taste wonderful, the bowl cheapens the experience.

What kind of protein would you include in your poki bowl?

Miss Taiwanese World fundraised at NAAAP SoCal Officer Installation and Gala

The National Association of Asian American Professionals (NAAAP) held its Annual Officer Installation in old Hollywood glamour at the Brandview ballroom in Glendale, CA. Members of the San Diego, Los Angeles, and Orange County chapter arrived in black tie apparel along with representatives from organizations such as the Taiwanese Junior Chamber, Asian American Professional Association, and Asian Youth Center to name a few.

To kick off the evening the royal court greeted guests at the door and posed for photos. It was a great opportunity to meet Asian Americans from all different industries as well as reconnect with old friends. The event was packed one, and guests had the opportunity to socialize and pass out business cards before heading to the ballroom.

Taiwanese Royal Court and US Congressman Ted Lieu
Once 7pm hit, guests sat at their assigned tables and enjoyed a lavish 10 course Armenian meal, which included a healthy and a generous selection of appetizers and an enormous plate of kabobs. The royal court visited tables to sell raffle tickets and successfully raised funds to help support NAAAP’s future projects and expenses. US Congressman Ted Lieu swore in the newly elected Southern California officers as they committed themselves to a year of service, and the formal ceremony concluded with cultural performances, music, and dancing. It was a rockin’ party and one that I will remember.

What kind of events do you like to attend? Socials? Professional Development?

Miss Taiwanese World publicized the Foundations 2nd Annual Mother’s Day Celebration Concert in Press Conference

A press conference at the Culture Center of Los Angeles was held on Sunday April 23rd to publicize the 2nd Annual Mother’s Day Celebration Concert hosted by our foundation. As Miss Taiwanese World, I attended with my Preteen and Teen royal court as local Chinese news stations and reporters learned more about the community event.

2016-2017 Royal Court

As the event’s sophomore year, the program has grown exponentially and is packed with vocal and dance performances. Starting at 12:30pm the concert at Culture Center of Los Angeles will feature talented mothers in the greater Los Angeles area. This free event will also present the Mother of the Year to a very well deserving woman.

Mommy and me

My mother also attended this press conference with me and I’m reminded on how her influence has helped shaped me as the young woman today. I’m forever indebted to this beautiful (inside and out) woman and I feel so blessed to call her my mom. I feel that the greatest lesson that I’ve learned from her is to always laugh, smile, and to never take life too seriously. I love you mom!

What life lesson did you learn from you mom?

California Roadtrip: Visit a Danish Village without leaving the US!

When I think California, I think of surfers and beaches. However, California’s vibrant immigrant community has formed some areas with distinctly European flair – one of them being Solvang, a quaint town that look as if it came straight out of a Disney movie.

Yummy tubs of butter cookies

An incredibly well-maintained and safe city in the Santa Ynez Valley, Solvang is just two hours outside of Los Angeles – though you would feel as if you’ve been transported across the world. Known  for their baked goods and pastries, it’s a favorite pitstop for many travelers.  Olsen’s Danish Village bakery  is one of the town’s most popular bakery shops and with four generations of family recipes people come from near and far to indulge in these award winning treats. Be sure to take home a bucket of butter cookies on your visit!

Solvang – a charming city

The city is also home to the Hans Christian Andersen Musuem, the author of “The Little Mermaid”, “The Ugly Duckling”, “Thumbelina”, and countless other fairytales. The musuem itself is modest and the displays are old fashioned; however, this FREE attraction is a nice place to reminisce your childhood, The musuem is located at the second floor of The Book Loft and next to the Solvang Coffee Shop. So after browsing through the classics you may be inspired to enjoy a cup of coffee with your nose in a book.

Fresh Aebleskivers

There are countless speciality shops and local restaurants in the area, but one of the best things to do eat are the fresh Aebleskivers at the Solvang Restaurant. These crispy pancake battered balls are doused with a gloop of raspberry jam and lightly sprinkled with powdered sugar. You can enjoy them at the restaurant, or order them at the outside take-out counter. There’s almost always a line, so you can be sure to grab a fresh trio of this treat. Yum!

What’s your favorite childhood fairytale?

California Roadtrip: Wine and Dine in Paso Robles (The Napa Valley of Southern California)

Napa Valley is a well known popular travel destination for wine connoisseurs in the Bay Area. With acres of grapes and hundreds of vineyards to tour, it’s a wine-o’s dream vacation.  Yet, those in the know flock to another California favorite with equally picturesque rolling hills and less tourist traction than the former. Paso Robles is a Southern California hidden gem with spectacular food and wine.

Panoramic view of Calcareous Vineyards

With over 200 wineries in the area it can be quite intimidating on deciding where to go. However, after extensive research we decided on Calcareous Vineyards in part because yelp offered a complimentary wine tasting upon check-in, and there were many positive reviews on the amazing view.  I think we scored he jackpot on that account. 🙂
When we arrived we were given four samples (one white and three reds) and took home the 2014 Calcareous Chardonnay and the 2013 Devil’s Canyon Syrah. The Chardonnay is sweet with fruity notes whereas the later is more gritty and bitter with a heavier tobacco accent.

Golden Oak Grill entrees

Good wine and food makes a winning combination and the Golden Oak Grill is a great establishment that serves fine dinning cuisine at an affordable price-point. We visited during lunch and ordered the Goat Cheese Salmon Salad ($13) and BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich ($12) with sweet potato upgrade. You can tell that the chef really takes pride in the food he prepares as the presentation of each dish is meticulously executed. And yes I can confirm with you that the food tastes just as good as it looks. I will definitely return here in a heartbeat and can’t wait to try other items on the menu.

Do you prefer Red or White wine?

California Roadtrip: How to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium for FREE plus cheap eats!

My friend and I took our rental and headed towards Monterey Bay – home of the world famous aquarium. I remember visiting the aquarium back as a child, but with adult admission circling the $50 range, I had a hard time convincing myself to make it a pitstop on this road trip. But I was able to kill two birds with one stone, by booking a local air bnb room with complimentary tickets! Sweet!

Just an FYI, many of the local air bnb lodging will provide this incentive to attract visiting guests.

After my friend and I checked into our airbnb space to pick up tickets we headed towards Cannery Row. There’s certainly a great deal of things to see, hear and touch and as an educator I especially loved learning about all the different sea creatures.

The aquarium is divided by themes spread across two floors. We were recommended to start on the west wing and work our way towards the east as it’s home to the new exhibit – Tentacles (yes!!! octopuses! :D).

Penguins, sea otters, sharks, sea turtles, you name it and they probably have an exhibit dedicated to it. My favorite was the jellyfish exhibits. They’re just so graceful and calming. Combined with the serene music that they play in the background you just can’t help but feel at peace.

We finished the aquarium in about three hours and spent the rest of our late afternoon and early evening walking around Cannery Row and enjoyed the sunset.

Now a post wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t give a recommendation on a hidden gem and this one is definitely a must especially if you love carbs!

When we punched in directions and headed towards Palermo Bakery we were surprised by the industrial exterior. You would never think to go here as it looks like a warehouse. There was no cash register, menu, na-da! It’s straight up bread factory. Regardless, we went in bright and early in the morning to see their offering. They sold everything from sourdough, to dinner rolls to entire loafs. My friend and I each bought a loaf for $2.40 a piece since our next destination is considered the SoCal Napa Valley. Stay tuned for my next post to find out where!

What’s a must see local attractions in Monterey Bay?
